What Do You Want?

I would like to welcome this weeks guest post to the blog, Xavier is a pretty cool guy. So cool, in fact, that I have named a character after him in my YA book!
Onwards
Michelle

My name is Xavier after St Francis Xavier. My mother is from Dublin and my father was a Tamil from Kuala Lumpur. I was born in Malaysia but brought up in Ireland. I have a Degree in Natural Sciences from TCD and spent most of my life as a secondary school teacher. I have taught in schools from Ireland to Japan and I retired from full-time teaching nearly 7 years ago to set up our own Private Hypno-Psychotherapy Practice here in Peel, Isle of Man, (Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic) with my wife Mary. I still teach for two hours every morning at the local high school mainly children with learning difficulties and emotional problems. I seemed to always gravitate to children who have slipped through the net and them to me. I love the balance that the teaching, therapy, and my family life have given me.  I wake up every day a very grateful man. My wife Mary is my partner on all levels of our life and as well as being an amazing wife and mother to our four children she is an amazing Hypno-Psychotherapist. We were both trained by Dr Joe Keaney of ICHP (The Institute of Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy in Ireland) and we are the only Hypnotherapists endorsed by the Department of Health in the UK practising here in the Isle of Man as members of the CNHC (Complementary & NaturalHealthcare Council.)

I came across Michelle by chance when I read one of her posts in which she spoke so lovingly of her father. Further posts revealed a caring teacher and a ball of fun. I immediately subscribed and I look forward to receiving her stories in my e-mail every week. Michelle asked me to write a guest post for her blog on any subject so I decided to write one on my favourite topic of all...
Over twenty years ago I had a dream that I remember as vividly today as I did all those years ago. In the dream I met God. He asked me what I wanted. I felt like a child and my mind went blank. I could have anything I wanted and I could not think of a single thing to say. I was struck dumb and I felt like a dummy! He asked me three times the same question...”Xavier, what do you want?”
In the end he answered for me ...”You want me...He said”
With That I burst into tears as he wrapped His arms around me and I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. I woke up the next morning to a pillow soaking wet through and a pain in my chest that felt as if I had been crying for days.
My question to all of you today is what would you say if you met God and he asked you ...”Child, what do you want?”

Alien Technology

The desk of the future.

Remember being a kid, way back in the day, when summers were always sunny and having tatoys was a treat? (And yeah, I call all crisps Tatoys, in my beautiful mind, all crisps are generically called Tatoys!) But do ya remember watching those oh so cool American movies and TV shows?
You know the ones! Something from the future is on earth, or we have been invaded by aliens. My favorite TV show, as a kid was StarTrek.  And do ya remember the delicious snippets of their alien technology that would populate our minds.

Well now we have alien technology, in the form of EXOdesk by EXOPC.
It is a much more reasonably priced version of the MicrosoftSurface (USD 7,600 approx)
It will make an appearance by 2012 at the CES in January. an interactive desk, sort of similar to the Microsoft surface in desk form. It will have a 40 inch HD touchscreen at the tip of your fingers. I suppose you could say it is a really big tablet. One of the details I could find was that it will have a widget with IE, mail app, social media timeline, calendar and of course you can customize it. You can even musical instruments on the EXOdesk.

You will still need a mouse and a keyboard. And apparently the cost will be USD 1,300.
In lay man terms some dudes took a LCD TV added a touch screen and a special os interface, but how cool it is that we now have alien technology!
Man the battle stations, code orange, Captain Jean-Luc Picard is going to war and he needs us to get to our touchscreen stations!

See this YT clip for all the gory beauty of this magnificent beast of a desk.

Winter Song - lyrics

Here are the lyrics for Winter Song, we will be singing this on Sunday 27.11.11 for charity. (click on the blue words for more dets, obvs!)

I would like to point out that I did not write this song, as one Twitter user thought!?!

The artists are Sara Bareilles are Ingrid Michaelson.

You can also download a word doc with the lyrics or copy, paste and print the below.

Bum bum bum bum
bum bum bum bumBum bum,
bum bum bum bumBum bum,

bum bum bum bum

This is my winter song to you

The storm is coming soon

It rolls in from the sea
My voice, a beacon in the night

My words will be your light

To carry you to me

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

They say that things just cannot grow

Beneath the winter snow

Or so I have been told
They say we're buried far

Just like a distant star

I simply cannot hold

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

This is my winter song

December never felt so wrong

Cause you're not where you belong

Inside my arms

Bum bum bum bum,

bum bum bum bum

Bum bum, bum bum bum bum

Bum bum, bum bum bum bum

I still believe in summer days

The seasons always change

And life will find a way
I'll be your harvester of light

And send it out tonight

So we can start again

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

This is my winter song

December never felt so wrong

Cause you're not where you belong

Inside my arms

This is my winter song to you

The storm is coming soon

It rolls in from the sea

My love a beacon in the night

My words will be your light

To carry you to me

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?
Is love alive

?Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?
Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?
Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Is love alive?

Twitter Xmas single

Brenda Drumm sent out a tweet on the 19 November 2011, and now Twitter is going to release a charity single. Twitter is going to meet up in Dublin to record the first ever Twitter Christmas Single, this Sunday.

X-Factor is great, but do we really need it to be Christmas number one every year? Why not spend our money on great music made by the people, with the profits going to the people. Christmas is all about children and, bearing this in mind, the profits from the single will go to the Neo Natal Unit at the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street Hospital, AKA "Unit 8."

Organiser, Brenda Drumm, said, 'I had an idea to record a Christmas charity single through Twitter - using contacts, singers etc from our Twitter streams.  And now we have a stylist, a studio, a videographer, a PR person, some TV presenters and personalities and a very willing and wonderful group of people or tweeps from Twitter to do the singing and organising.'

Details
Date: Sunday 26 November
Time: 1pm
Venue: Westin Hotel on Westmoreland Street, Dublin 2
Song: Winter Song

Oh and did I mention the celebs that are going?

Help Twitter Help you - Part 2

I wrote part one here. I hope that it helped you. In this post we will discuss some more great websites which can help you maximise your Twitter time.

·         TwitterSearch This is the Twitter site for searching, you can search using advanced here.

  • Linkbun Love this one! LinkBunch lets you put multiple links into one small link which you can share over Twitter. Here is one I made earlier.

  • Friedcell It's a simple browser add-on - we go through your tweets, find those with links and post them to your delicious account.

  • Hashtags This shows you the trends in Twitter, who used a hashtag, when and the tweet with the hashtag.

  • Digsby This is a social networking tool that alerts you of events like new messages and gives you a live Newsfeed of what your friends are up to.

  • Twhirl is a desktop client for the Twitter microblogging service. Most of the features available on the Twitter website are accessible through twhirl, too. Plus, a lot of usability enhancements have been added.

Help Twitter Help you - Part 1

New to Twitter or an old hand at it. Well this post is for you. I have gone to the 4 corners of the net to bring you the best tools to enhance Twitter. I wrote a piece on Twitter Rules, if you want to go there first.

  • Twitterfeed This is a fantastic opportunity to add your blog feed and link it to other social media platforms. You just need to register by provided an email address and then add your blog feed. TO get this go to settings, site feed and copy ti from there. For example, my RSS url is http://feeds.feedburner.com/TeacherKing. In the TwitterFeed site just click through the site to link your other SM platforms.

  • Twtvite Are you a writer planning a book launch? Or are you a school planning a school play? You can use this to send invites to your email/Facebook/Twitter contacts. It converts the replies into a guest list which you can print, it also provides you with name-tag to print. You can use the Twtvite page to see related tweets and photos.

  • Tweetree Tweetree puts your Twitter stream in a tree so you can see the posts people are replying to in context. It also pulls in lots of external content like twitpic photos, youtube videos and more, so that you can see them right in your stream without having to click through every link your friends post.

  • Blip Internet radio made social - Free music streaming and sharing, you can upload your Twitter list and use it as another sm platform.

  • Tweetgrid This helps you to create a Twitter search dashboard that updates in real time. So, this can help you find out who is talking about what. Here is a example for you.

The Road to Hell

EDIT: Due to a change in layout some blog posts have been moved. I will have the original post back here soon.

NaNoWriMo

How many of you have heard of NaNoWriMo? Well, Val Healy is blogging about it on writing.ie . She gives some really good advice. She also shares about her negative thoughts, getting in the way of her writing.  Her main fear is of her ‘inner critic.’ I wish I had an inner critic. I seem to have an ‘inner cheerleader.’ And she fills my head with such notions that are more blinding than any pom-poms;

‘It will take you no time to write about 80k words,’

’You can do this in your sleep,’

’You work too hard....maybe just research tonight’ and

‘Why don’t you take some time off?’

I have been procrastinating, a lot. I tweet, read books and blogs, blog, teach, work, drive, drink tea, watch TV, in fact I would do anything not to write. My favourite pastime was ‘research.’ I could ‘research’ till the preverbal cows came home.

As some of you may remember, I entered the Irish Writers Centre Novel Fair. They emailed to confirm they received my manuscript (which I had tied with orange ribbons!) and to confirm that I do, in fact, have an ‘inner critic’. Oh the horror of it all!

Five hundred and seventy people entered, and out of all of that they are going to select twenty. 20 out of 570! Well, I am not a defeatist person but you gotta know when to cut your losses and move on.

My inner critic also made me realise:

Blogging about writing is not writing.

Tweeting about writing is not writing.

Talking about writing – well you get my drift!

I really doubt I will get a call for the next round but you know what? I don’t care! I have gotten some gems of advice in my course notes from Caren Kennedy and I know how to progress.

Give me a; ‘We won't be defeated and we won't be outdone. 'Cause Moloney King is number one! If you believe in winning - clap.’ If this was Twitter I would be hash tagging #CLAPPING round-about-now.

Why is my inner cheerleader back? Well, they need a finished MS by January and this will ensure that I will sit down and stick to that deadline.

I have married my inner critic to my inner cheerleader and together we will stick to that deadline; writing, fighting and clapping all the way to the orange ribbon finish line!
