Easy Way to Create a Static Landing Page in Blogger

OMG! There is a much easier way of creating this static page than I previously informed you about here.

I still haven't figured out how to make a separate web page for a landing page. I mean, I could do all the HTML coding myself, but I'd rather be writing my YA book. I have waisted enough time on this...so I will wait and maybe hire someone to make a proper separate landing page as a welcome mat for my blog. In the meantime I will clean the blog up and I will make a simple header.

On a side note I have been reading HTML code all day and when I did a quick spell check there I was about to change 'proper' to 'pooper.' I am so over it!

How to Create a Drop Down Menu in Blogger

Do you like my fancy new drop down menu. I have all my post tagged with labels and just used their URLs to make the new menu and sub-menu.

Have fun!

Creating a Static Landing Page in Blogger

No subbing today, couldn't get my head into writing after reading a depressing article on the future of teaching so I decided to mess with HTML. As you do!

I have changed the layout so that I now have a static landing page. If you type thhp://teachermoloneyking.com you will be redirected to my About Me page. (I need to edit that, but that involved me talking about me in the third person and that's kinda creepy.)

I changed my pages feature and added drop-down menus  they are a slicked way of sharing your social media, blogger list and articles. I used to use a word cloud, but this drop down menu is far cool.

Here is the vid I used to create the landing page. I get asked a lot of question about the 'how to' of blogging so I thought I pre-empt it and share the info now. So, here it is:

100,000 Hits & Note to Self on Stats

Mwah ha ha ha!! I have been looking at my blog stats and I decided to critically analysis the data and then use it to my advantage. That was about one month and 12,000 hits ago. Since I used the knowledge and my blog has finally reached over 100,000 hits. Not bad.

Not that the bog hits matter; they don't. I blog to keep track of info that interests me. Truest me, blogging is much easier than being over loaded with bookmarks.

Did you see that Simpsons episode where Homer puts out pieces of candy to trap his enemy? Yeah, well the info is my candy and the trap is my blog. It is very nice to get hits, though. Especially international ones.

This blog is now more popular with America and China that it is with Ireland and the UK.

Right, I have a book to write. So get outta here, g'wan - scram.

And thank you, whoever you are for hitting me,yo!

Oh! Piece of candy.

Nom, nom, nooom!

Versatile Blogger Award

I won a Versatile Blogger award – which basically requires the recipient to list seven hitherto unknown facts about themselves and the pass on the Versatile mantle to a few other bloggers.

Seven somewhat interesting facts about me that no one knows.

  • I had a pony called Clonmore that I was scared of but I pretended to everyone that my asthma would act up when I was near her just to avoid riding out.

  • I use to be afraid of flying. After a particularly rotten teaching practice I boarded a plane to Spain and  freaked out.  I’m grand now. No caffeine or alcohol 24 hours before flying, relax my muscles, wear comfy clothes, and smile. Yeah, smiling really help. You can’t be scared if you smile.

  • I um, can't think of anything and I am in school right now, blogging at lunch time!
  •
  • I like reading the dictionary.

  • I do not watch the soaps on TV. Unless I’m sick, then I find them, strangely, comforting. I love documentaries both in Irish on TG4 and BBC docos. My weakness is reality TV.
  •
  •
  • I used to think that books were actually keys to another world when I was little, before I could read. I saw how my brothers and sister transformed after reading them and I wanted in on their adventure. I looked at an author bio on a book jacket and asked my brother if anyone can write a book or only special people and when he pointed to the picture and said that one day it could be me....I whispered to the book, ‘some day I’m gonna make my very own key and maybe another little girl will use it to open her very own adventure.
  •
  •
  • On my list of fears: hairdressers. I went to the ‘best’ local one as a young teen and came out looking like a dude. I try to go to them sometimes...but I’d rather try it myself.
  •

I award the next Versatile Blogger Award to:

Housekeeping, Catherine Tate, Followers and Blogger

When you read a magazine do you contact them with a comment? More than likely, you don't. So, why would people bother bother commenting on blogs?

There are two reasons that I would ever bother to leave a comment. One, I have been following the blog for a while and just want to leave a short comment to show support. Two, I want another link to me on Google.

So, I got rid of the comments on my blog.

I also got rid of email followers. I checked the stats, they told me who you were (I was very surprises by one or two of them!) and how often you open the email posts. I don't get hits on the blog if you open the posts in your inbox; so I got rid of it. That, and the fact that I can now post as often as I want without having to worry about clogging email subscribers inbox.

But, to show some sort of community spirit, I am bringing back the followers gadget. Not that I ever bother to go to the blogs I follow via that gadget. But there may be some people here that would use it.

So there you have it, my housekeeping news, not that you're bothered. Am I right?

I aint bothered.

Away with the Fairies

My favourite book blogger of Yellow Brick Reads fame, has just published her first book!

Away with the Fairies/ Ar Shiúl leis na Daoine Maithe, it's a bilingual (Irish/English) picture booked aimed at a 7-9 age group.

I love this blog and was delighted to hear her announcement.

Go over there and have a look. The pictures of the book are so beautiful. Click it to have a look-see.

Congratulations Maeve!

Tumblr That!

I wonder...is the traditional blog a tad passée?

Well, it depends on what you are looking for. If you want a professional website and info dump for people who want to trawl through your long blog posts, find out about your books and where to buy them, then I suppose the blog is handy. But, if you want engagement in a short and snappy  medium* then Tumblr is your only man.

*This especially applies to the YA (young adult) market and it applies even more to the American YA book market. I could say that I write for the love of it (which I do), but if I was to be  when I am published I'd also enjoy using my marketing and sales skills to ensure the best possible sales for my book.

I am very new to Tumblr, I still don't get it, but I can see its appeal. Just look at Maggie Stiefvater on Tumblr. She only set it up a few weeks ago and it is hopping with love. And do not get me started on Sarah Rees Brennan, that lady knows how to Tumblr it.

If you want to suss it out, have a look at mine or even better; set up your own and follow me. We can learn to Tumblr together!

Short listed for a Blog Award Ireland 2012

I made the long list but I really didn't expect to get on the short list. No way, not with so many excellent blogs on the long list, no way in Blog would I get onto the short list. But, last week, I found out that I did.
I am delighted, it's great to receive some recognition. I'd like to say a special to the gang at The Blog Awards Ireland and to sponsors Red Oak.
Red Oak sponsor Best Personal Blog category, which is the category we are on. Best thing about these awards is that they have a judging panel, so no public voting!

How my Blog Helped me Reach my Goals - One Year Old Today!!

My blog is ONE year old today, I have come a long way since my first post Teaching X-Factor. I wrote my blog/life/learning/social media plan, and I am relieved to say I have met most of the objectives.

G'wa-on and have a read of them. Honestly this blog helped me to write it out...it being my life objectives, I made some serious connections and learnt so much on the way.

My objective are written in the blog/life/learning/social media plan and below are the results.

1.      Gain more IT knowledge – Yeap, by reading blogs, writing my blog and tweeting I have certainly learnt a lot. And yes, having the latest technology also helps! As one computer programmer said to me a year ago, ‘seriously if you want to do well in this world you need to, at the very least, have a smart phone!’

2.      Share more IT knowledge – read the blog, I have a good bit of IT stuff here.

3.      Read more teacher blogs – Yeap – done and done. I find #edchatie (on twitter) really really really helps in gaining more IT/teaching knowledge.

4.      Teach IT to Teachers – I am now a tutor for NCTE and Lero.

5.      Read more writer/editor and publisher blogs – Oh boy have I fulfilled this!

6.      Get published on other blogs or websites – I sure have! I have been asked to guest post on several blogs; I interviewed writers and I have even wrote book launch reports for the writing.ie

7.      Use the blog to get published on traditional media – Yup! Yup! I was on the Tipperary Star and even interviewed on Tipp Mid West Radio.

8.      To get over 35,000 hits – To date I have 45,890 hits *BOOM!*

9.      Study the hits to cater even more for the readership - Yes, I have studied the referring URLs, bounce rate, search terms and I have most deffo taken advantage of this.

10.   Study the hits to grab new readers – Mhhh; I wanted a larger readership from more non-writers and non-bloggers so I went to them. Won’t tell ya how, yet!

11.   Grab the non-bloggers – Yes, this is tricky. It took a year of constant content creation and slowly readers telling other readers and a few more tactics and I’m getting more hits from the very market I wanted to expand in.

12.   To be included in a print newsletter – Yeap! If school newsletters count! The aould blog has been featured on two!

13.   To be seen as a ‘go to gal,’ – I was asked to give a presentation at the CESI Conference Feb 2012 and the ICT in Education Conference on May 19th, so I guess this means that I am half way there.

14.   To learn more about the areas above – The reading never stops, but when you have smart devices, it is never a problem!

15.   To guest lecture somewhere (anywhere) - Yup! I was asked to guest lecturer in LIT Tipperary at their Clonmel campus. I lectured in digital media, social media, measuring stats....and I loved it!

16.   To write book reviews - The fantastic Louise Kennedy has asked me to do a book review on a psychological crime book, out of my comfort zone, but I cannot wait. I will be writing a book review for the amazing and fabulous Inis Magazine, children's books magazine. I am over the moon about this opportunity.

17.   To do some instructional writing in relation to IT – Yes! I can’t say anymore on this, but yes...I am in talks to do some pretty cool instructional writing in relation to IT and education. I will leave it at that.

18.   Become more efficient at curating the best information – After talking with Bernie ( @topgold ) , I downloaded Readability. On my Twitter TL or in my Twitter lists I go to the people that I know have the best content and click on read later. Then I go to my browser and open Instapaper.com. All the links are there. If I see anything I like on the browser I will copy and add the URL to my instapaper. Once finished, I download the paper to Kindle and read it off line later. Tis all so handy!

19.   Write a book – I have written two *Boom!* Writing is difficult, the characters take over your story (and your mind), you have to constantly rewrite, change POV, edit, cut....but having written something is pretty amazing! I have to do so much redrafting on the children’s book and the YA book that it makes my head spin. But what else are Easter holidays for, eh?

20.   Make connections with published writer and publishers –  I have met publishers and editors from Hachette, O’Brien, Mercier and some even follow me on Twitter. I follow, and am followed back by, the coolest published writers on Twitter. They are an inspiring bunch.

If    If I keep going at this pace then, I will, (I hope! I hope!), be lecturing, (Bish!), teaching, (Bash!) and writing, (Bosh!)

My job won’t be traditional, it will be different. I will teach in primary schools, teach for Lero and the NCTE, I will write books for my publishers, and lecturing in digital media. Oh and will complete masters....now all I need to do is find the perfect masters...

Editor’s note: Can you see how having goals can help you study and realign your content thus aiding you to reach these goals. It is imperative to plan, research, study, and plan again. If I can achieve all of this that so can you. We are all IT-capable.

How has your blog helped you achieve your goals?

Has Twitter helped you in any way, either personally or business wise?

快乐学习

Have you ever tried to talk in French? I have, and guess what keeps happening? I end up talking a mixture of French, English and Irish.

When I teach Irish in school, I stick to my lesson plans and books. Whenever I can, I use informal Irish throughout the day.

When I started the post grad I had better French than Irish! The Gaeltacht was morto mixture of French, Irish and English! I had to remember Irish and forget my French.

I want to learna new language, or at leadt learn a few key phrases. I am doung so much in Irish, the language of maths and computer programming languages that I now demand something completely different.....something like Chinese.

I found these online resources below:

How to Make The Most of Your Time Online

I wrote part one of 'How a Blog Can Help You Reach Your Goals, as my blog will be a year old on April 18 2012, I will post the second part on Wednesday. In that post I will let you know which goals were reached....trust me...it is going to be a pretty interesting post!

Don't waist your time surfing, pausing, reading. You need to decide what is it you want to know from the web.

I want to know more about:

Digital marketing

Creative writing

Book reviews

Children's literature

Social Media

Instructional writing

e-publishing for education

Published Irish Writers

Technology

All things App-ish

Book Fairs

After talking with Bernie "topgold" Goldbach, I set up my instapaper account and downloaded Readability app, this set up a 'read later,' option on the links from twitter. Then when I go to my web account on instapaer all my links are there. If I see something I like while browsing I just past the URL into the add function in instapaper.

It is pretty awesome. If you want to read all the links I have read, (or plan to read). You cannot set your account to public so I downloaded the CSV file and pasted all the links below. This took me a lot of time to curate...so you're welcome!

On new news from the web....I have found some pretty cool new on line applications:

This free, easy app for creating scrolling timeline-style content is a fun way for students or teachers to create presentations.

Screenr is a new web based screencast recording tool. You can record screencasts and publish them to your profile on Screenr.

Dipity
is a site that makes it simple for you or your students to create and share interactive timelines about any subject or topic. You can embed You Tube videos, Twitter, RSS feeds, Blogger, flickr, Picasa, Last FM, and more into your Dipity timelines.

How a Blog can Help You Reach Goals (part one)

This is part one of a two part series.

The blog will be a year old on April 18th 2012. I original set it up just to get some primary school teaching, but when I realised the power of social media. I reassessed my plan. We all plan, whether we know it or not. Sometimes, we need to sit down and study to come up with a better plan. If you want to be a social media teacher, published writer, make important connections, a better IT teacher, or simply want to know how to set your goals for your blog/life ambitions then stay tuned, stay informed and read on to see how I did it.

When I started to blog I coagulated my IT degree, marketing experience, teaching post grad, financial reporting, web design know how and my stubbornness and spewed out this set of goals. The main ingredient is stubbornness, we all have that, now you just need to apply it.

My blog ambitions:

1. Gain more IT knowledge

2. Share more IT knowledge

3. Read more teacher blogs

4. Get paid to teach IT

5. Read more writer/editor and publisher blogs

6. Get published on other blogs or websites

7. Use the blog to get published on traditional media

8. To get over 35,000 hits at year end April 18th

9. Study the hits to cater even more for the readership

10. Study the hits to grab new readers

11. Grab the non-blog readers

12. To be included in a print newsletter

13. To be seen as a ‘go to gal,’ in IT teaching, creative writing in primary schools, blogging, scratch, social media,

14. To learn more about the areas above

15. To guest lecture somewhere (anywhere)

16. To write book reviews on children’s and or YA (young adult) books

17. To write book reviews on children’s and or YA (young adult) books for powerful bloggers, recognised websites or traditional print media.

18. Become more efficient at curating the best information from Twitter links

19. Write a book

20. Make connections with published writer and publishers

The thing is guys, I am a primary school teacher with a degree in IT, a live lived in financial reporting in the IFSC and I do not want to become a full time primary school teacher, it was never my intention. I always have seen this post grad as a jumping off point. I needed to learn and network. And guess what....its working!

I will post the results of my goal setting later in the week.

Can you see how having goals can help you study and re-align your content; thus aiding you to reach these goals. It is imperative to plan, research, study, and plan again. If I can achieve all of this that so can you. We are all IT-capable.

On a side note, I have changed the blog's Facebook fan page to MoloneyKing, in keeping with the brand.
How has your blog helped you achieve your goals?

Has Twitter helped you in any way, either personally or business wise?

How To Master IT

Long story, my min sim for the iPad and meteor hotspot ran out of data! Meteor became confused when I asked them how to check the balance. I checked my account on line and my bills and all of a sudden, this month the mini was nowhere to be seen.

I must have gotten it on a short contract, but there I was with no data! I am lucky to know some serious tech heads and they have been at me for ages, ‘why don’t you use the phone as a hotspot and just get a bit more data on it.'

Now I know that some people out there think I have everything IT sussed, but I really don’t. I have to find my way just like you guys do. Sure my primary degree is in IT&T, but that was all quantum physics, programming, analogue and digital thingies. I didn’t learn many practical things. So it wrecks my head when I listen to people say, ‘Sure I am dead-head when it comes to IT.’

I cried when I got my phone. I had issues with syncing, data back up, I couldn't figure out a way to save documents from my pc to iPad to iPhone and edit them all,  and what in god’s name was iTunes? I only listen to music on the radio;  the last music I bought was on a tape.

But the difference between me and the ‘dead-heads’ is that I am stubborn and will never give up. I locked myself away for three solid days until I figured out the iphone, dropbox, syncing all of my devices, the best word software for iPad and iphone, icould,  iText, viber, instapaer reading in kindle, iTunesU, readability, Evernote, audiobooks, picturebook, iBooks, QRReader, instagram, glow draw and the list goes on.

And what else did I do? I sent out a few tweets asking for advice, I followed a load of tech-heads and read their blogs, heck I even read the iPad magazine. I don’t like depending on the spoken word for advice, I like my information to be in text format, be it in a text, tweet,  email, blog post or book.

We have no excuses; if I can do IT so can you.

Then I could spruce up my teacher cv and boast to the bloggershpere that Moloney King Is A WINNER..........

Phew! Long breath....wow I just realised that I like having stamps of approval. Man, I am such a nerd......nominate me?!?!

EDIT: I know I should stick to one area on my blog but so far...I haven't! I blog about teaching, creative writing, the arts, popculture and technology. So my query would be what category would I fit into if people were nice enough to nominate me?

Mhhhhh I suppose I could slot into Best Technology, Best Newcomer, Best Personal Blog, Best Science/Education Blog,  Best Blog Post and or Best Blog.

But what do I know?
